Clingman's Dome

Clingman’s Dome

Clingman’s dome is one of the best views if not the best view in the entire Smoky Mountain National Park.  From the Majestic Cabin, majesticcabin.com, it is nine vector (straight) miles due north.  However, it is an approximate one hour and fifteen minute drive through the Smoky Mountain Cherokee Park Entrance.  You may want to stop at a few of the viewing lots on your journey up to capture some breathtaking views.

At an elevation of 6,643 feet, it is the highest mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the highest point in the state of Tennessee, and the highest point on the 2,192 mile Appalachian Trail.  It is also the third highest peak in mainland Eastern North America, after Mount Mitchell (6684 feet), and Mount Craig (6,647 feet).

The hike to the top is approximately 1.3 miles total up and back.  The grade up is 8% to 12% which is considered steep; however, there are benches along the way if you need a breather.  A few things to consider:

  • Bring a jacket as it will be cooler.
  • Holidays, such as the Fourth of July,  will be busy.
  • There are restrooms at the parking lot at the top of the mountain.
  • Picking a good weather day will help with the view.

Have fun!
